This unit introduces students to the various strategies that have been employed by artists from pre-Christian times to the present in their attempts to render a spiritual presence. It explores how the differing conceptual frameworks throughout history have necessitated the creation of new means of figuring the 'spiritual'. It focuses on the romantic imagination as the most successful theoretical basis on which to think through the complex problem of spiritual presence. The unit provides an overview of the way in which a range of traditional sources have been incorporated by contemporary artists in their quest to render a spiritual presence. -- Course Website
