This unit concentrates on the role of women artists in the history of Western art and the contribution of art historians. It is built on the premise that women have always been involved in the production of art. Thus, as Grizelda Pollock suggests in her introduction to Vision and Difference, the unit does not seek to rediscover lost women artists, but rather to examine from the history of that culture the various structural and ideological obstacles that have led to the marginalisation of women's contributions to the visual arts.
