This unit covers the art historical debates over European modernism that have defined much of the disciplinary work of the twentieth century. It focuses on the lineage from early French impressionism and proto-impressionism to avant-garde movements such as surrealism. This lineage has been subject to scholarly investigation and revisionism that debates the relationship that these movements have to their historical situation. The unit develops the student's ability to recognise these debates and discern their central contentions.
