This unit is concerned with the design and conduct of surveys for obtaining information about health in the population including health-related behaviour, experiences, attitudes and opinions. Areas covered include conceptualisation of the research problem, survey design and planning, development of data-gathering instruments, field-work procedures and the preparation of data for analysis. Aspects of sampling theory and sample selection are covered, as well as measurement theory, scaling techniques and sources of error in surveys.
