This unit introduces students to the theoretical and conceptual frameworks from economics and other disciplines that enable them to critically analyse the functioning of a health system. Special features of health care markets that make them different from other markets are examined, and the role of economic incentives, competition and regulation in the operations of a health system are explored. Methods and techniques for evaluating the cost-effectiveness of health care programs are discussed, with emphasis on their integration into resource allocation and decision making. Current policy issues and proposals for health care reform in developed and developing countries are reviewed. -- Course Website
