This unit analyses contemporary problems of international security broadly conceived as affecting the security of individuals and communities as well as particular states. The unit first reviews some broad issues such as the nature of security threats, the causes of war and the phenomenon of ethnic conflict. It then examines contemporary problems such as counter-insurgency and terrorism. The unit also investigates a range of theoretical issues and perspectives, including securitisation, the role of norms in relation to war, the relationship between democracy and war, and gendered dimensions of security. -- Course Website
