This unit examines competing identities in global politics, with a focus on nationalism and ethnicity in various regions and on Islam as a global religion. The unit begins with overviews of the competing identity claims of nationalism and cosmopolitanism, and of the different roles of ethnicity and religion in global politics. It proceeds to analyse forms of nationalism in Europe and European settler states such as the USA and Australia, as well as nationalist rivalry and ethnic conflicts in Asia.
