This unit explores the differences between classical Chinese acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine and Western medical acupuncture, along with the historical and scientific basis of the use of acupuncture and dry needling. The unit reviews myotomes and sclerotomes and their relevance to the positioning of acupuncture needles; the use of dry needling in the treatment of myofascial trigger point pain syndromes; and contraindications and precautions in the use of acupuncture in the podiatric patient. The unit examines the functional anatomy of the foot and ankle, integrating this with pathology, dysfunction and rehabilitation.
