This unit provides students with a basic introduction to the principles and practice of podiatric medicine through a series of lectures and laboratory participation. The history and development of podiatry in Australia and selected countries is discussed. The scope of practice of podiatry and its role in the health care system, together with clinical areas of specialisation and the importance of involvement in clinical and scientific research in podiatry are explored. The normal ontogeny and function of the lower limb with particular reference to the foot and ankle are discussed.
