This seminar critically examines the claims made by advocates of democracy, paying particular attention to the claim that democracy promotes social justice. The first part of the unit consists of an overview of the various forms of democratic governments and the claims made by their proponents. The second part assesses the connection between democracy and social justice. In modern times, democracy has derived much of its standing from the claim that it is effective at promoting the development of just societies.
