This unit covers the basics of infectious disease and antibiotic drug substances including laboratory classes concerned with the culturing and identification of micro-organisms and their sterilisation in preparation for tutorial classes on the manufacture and testing of sterile pharmaceutical products. There is instruction on the safe production and use of cytotoxic preparations, this is complemented by a site visits to a hospital pharmacy and pharmaceutical manufacturing facility. Consideration is also given to the packaging and preservation of pharmaceutical dosage forms and other specialised products such as those for application to mucosal membranes.
