This unit introduces students to theoretical and conceptual frameworks from economics and other disciplines that enable them to critically analyse the functioning of a health system. Special features of health care markets that make them different from other markets are examined, and the role of economic incentives, competition and regulation in the operations of a health system are explored. The economics of the pharmaceutical sector and its role in the health system is outlined. Methods and techniques for evaluating the cost-effectiveness of alternative treatment options are discussed, with emphasis on their integration into decisions relating to resource allocation.
