This unit investigates healthy diet and living for individuals at all stages of life. The common causes and treatments for a range of common diseases such as malnutrition, obesity, diabetes, endocrine disorders, cancer, heart disease, and asthma and allergies are covered. The unit also describes development of drugs for the treatment of these diseases and their mechanisms of action. Students are introduced to a number of high profile pharmaceutics that failed upon introduction to the market so that the necessity for thorough clinical trials is appreciated. -- Course Website

Prerequisites: BIOC2201 Biochemistry of the Cell, CHEM2211 Synthetic and Materials Chemistry and one of the following: CHEM2221 Biological and Medicinal Chemistry or CHEM2210 Structure Determination and Physical Chemistry
