This unit examines, from an anthropological and sociological perspective, ways in which cultures and communities develop musically, tracing similarities and differences between cultures as well as the nature of musical subcultures. Using residential teaching and distance learning readings with self-assessing and self-reflecting unit materials, students develop theoretical knowledge and apply it to practical situations. One assessed 2500-word essay demonstrates reflective critical knowledge, especially in responding to methodological issues in the domain. -- Course Website
