This unit focuses upon the development of Western art music in the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first century. It covers the modernist and postmodernist phases of development including such styles as impressionist, expressionist, neo-classical/neo-tonal, twelve-note, serial, indeterminate, minimalist, polystylist, neo-romantic and the new forms of complexity in the last twenty years or so. The works of Debussy, Stravinsky, Bartók, Schoenberg, Berg, Webern, Messiaen, Boulez, Stockhausen, Cage, Penderecki, Reich, Glass, Pärt, Ferneyhough and others form the repertoire to be studied in terms of these trends and characteristics.
