Along with Christianity, the legacy of ancient Greece and Rome was inescapable in Europe and her New World colonies from the end of the Roman Empire until the French Revolution. Referring to the influence and prestige of the Classics, a medieval commentator said that the thinkers of his period were "dwarves standing on the shoulders of giants". Medieval and early modern writers, artists and intellectuals looked back to Greek and Roman figures, such as Plato, Aristotle, Virgil, Ovid, Seneca and Boethius, for inspiration and guidance.
