This unit covers the archetype equations of mathematical physics as well as the solution behaviour exhibited by these equations. Questions of existence, uniqueness, convergence and usefulness are also discussed. Algebraic software packages are used. Topics include Fourier series (usefulness, convergence, singularity extraction); separation of variables; finite and integral transform methods; asymptotics; perturbation methods; classification and properties of second-order PDEs; and numerical schemes. -- Course Website
