This unit consists of three components—lectures, tutorials and assignments. Lecture topics include thermodynamics and phase diagrams; diffusion; solidification and crystal growth; solid-state transformations; and industrial processing of engineering materials. Applications drawn from industrial processes include casting, welding, heat treatment of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys and transformation-toughened ceramics. Tutorials are conducted in an open consultative format. Students are expected to work through a set of problems and consult the lecturer when experiencing difficulties. The problems are designed to help students enhance their understanding of the topics covered in lectures and... -- Course Website
