This unit considers the origins of patents of inventions which are the oldest form of intellectual property. A patent is a monopoly granted by the Crown of the sole right to exploit any 'manner of manufacture' in respect of inventions.<br/><br/>Consideration is given to the role of patents in today's technologically driven society and their place in the international context, taking into account the various international conventions. The unit gives a broad outline of patent law and the principal requirements for obtaining and maintaining a patent under the Commonwealth of Australia Patents Act 1990.
