This unit focuses on the process of institutional psychiatry, in both the mental health and the criminal justice systems. In addition to those matters covered in LAWS5519 Forensic Psychiatry (formerly LAWS8519 Forensic Psychiatry), topics include the nature of the civil commitment process and psychiatric expertise in diagnosis; the nature of psychiatric treatment in psychiatric hospitals; and the mechanisms for release of civilly committed patients. -- Course Website
