Non-government organisations have a long history of involvement in the criminal justice system. In recent years, private sector involvement has grown at a rapid pace, most notably with the increasing use of private security and the development of private prisons. This unit evaluates these trends by comparing developments in the various states of Australia, the United States of America and the United Kingdom. The focus is on the quality, efficacy and cost-effectiveness of privatisation and on the key question of accountability. -- Course Website
