This unit examines issues of contemporary concern relating to (1) police–community relations including the role of community policing and surveillance; (2) police responses to violence including domestic and family violence; (3) police discretion and police 'gate-keeping' powers in areas such as prostitution, street policing and domestic violence; (4) the relationship between the police and marginal and minority groups; (5) police recruitment and training; (6) trends in accountability, oversight and scrutiny of the police; (7) the emergence of private policing; and (8) Aboriginal–police relations.
