This unit focuses on the processes of institutional psychiatry in the criminal justice system. Whenever appropriate, it undertakes a comparative analysis focused largely on practices in the Pacific region but not excluding reference to Canada, England and the United States of America. Topics considered depend largely on students' interests, but may include the nature of the pre-trial phase of the criminal justice system; mental state defences in criminal trials from the point of view of reforms in such defences; the nature of psychiatric treatment in prisons and psychiatric hospitals; the mechanisms for release of forensic patients, and outpatient and aftercare arrangements. -- Course Website
