This unit looks at the effect of law on women's lives and the impact (or lack of impact) of women's lives on law. It introduces students to the sources, breadth and history of feminist legal scholarship. This involves an examination of key concepts of feminist theory, such as the public–private dichotomy, the exclusion or silencing of women, both institutionally and in the substance of law, the situated nature of knowledge and the intersection of race and gender. The unit illustrates the application and development of theory through analysis of specific laws. -- Course Website
