This unit provides students with an overview of the key elements of the Australian system of law and government and seeks to empower them to participate confidently in that system, both by the assertion of their rights and through the recognition and fulfilment of their responsibilities. Students develop an understanding of the processes by which both statute law and judge-made law are formulated and interpreted, and how both can evolve over time. The unit covers, in an introductory way, the basic principles of constitutional law, tort law and contract law. It also introduces students to the fundamental doctrines and principles which underpin our criminal law. -- Course Website
