This unit builds on the basic concepts taught in microbiology and provides an introduction to medically important bacteria and their role in human health and disease. It covers human bacterial pathogens and normal flora; sites colonised within the body; mechanisms of infection; manifestations of disease and basic epidemiology; laboratory diagnosis by microscopy, culture and serology; and the fundamental principles of chemotherapy. The lectures are complemented by a laboratory component where the necessary skills in diagnosing bacterial infections using a range of laboratory techniques are taught. -- Course Website
