This unit comprises two main themes—the history and context of public health, and the Australian health system. The development of public health over the last century or so has influenced the approaches to public health today. The unit describes public health movements since the mid-nineteenth century and the thinking that has influenced approaches to public health since then. The Australian health system is a dynamic and complex set of organisations and people. It exists in a matrix of policy decisions, financial agreements and organisational interdependence.
