This unit builds on existing knowledge in geotechnical engineering, developing an understanding of how geotechnical structures impact on and interact with the environment. Techniques for improving the engineering properties of geological features are examined and include mechanical and chemical treatments. Techniques for analysing the stability of waste storage sites in the mining and municipal waste sector are dealt with and procedures for monitoring and predicting the potential impact of these facilities on the environment are studied. Conventional theories of saturated soil behaviour are developed to include the mechanics of unsaturated soils and the application of these theories, and... -- Course Website
