This unit discusses constructions of masculinities for selected case studies in Europe, Australia and Asia since c.1700. Students explore changing cultural assumptions about masculinity; the power relations that structure a range of masculinities such as hegemonic or subordinated masculinities; the intersection between masculinities, class and race; and historical changes in the relationship between masculinities and femininities. Lectures and tutorials introduce students to key theoretical frameworks for conceptualising masculinities, drawing from feminism, queer theory, sociology and cultural history.
