This Level 1 unit in European Studies introduces students to central aspects of contemporary European societies and cultures. With the end of Soviet socialism and the fall of the wall which divided Western and Eastern Europe in 1989, the face of Europe changed dramatically. Since 1989, and particularly since the formation of the European Union in 1993 and its expansion to include the formerly communist states of Central Europe in 2004, a new awareness of the sociopolitical, linguistic and cultural interrelationships has developed among European nations.
