This unit includes but is not limited to an introduction of ecological principles; quantitative ecosystem science; energy flow; element cycling; ecological principles and land use management; adaptation of organisms to aquatic and terrestrial environments; fluctuations in the physical environment and the consequences; ecological engineering concepts and methods as outlined by H. T. Odum; and various case studies such as oxygenation of anoxic or hypoxic systems. The unit examines the science behind ecological engineering and its design challenges such as remediation of eutrophic systems and facing-catchment acidification.
