This unit focuses on the practical application of the principles of evidence-based medicine to clinical practice in emergency settings. Evidence-based medicine is 'the integration of best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values' (Sackett, 2000). Through the use of case-based scenarios, participants develop the knowledge and skills to effectively and critically appraise research papers relating to emergency medicine/prehospital emergency care clinical care, including the ability to decide on the applicability of the evidence to address a specific clinical question.
