This unit provides an introduction to literacy-related issues. Topics may include an overview of the teaching of literacy; an understanding of literacy in the general community as well as debates over falling standards; literacy across the curriculum; academic English and its key features; the authority of written text; the relationship between speech and writing; the emergence of electronic language (text messaging, email, Internet chat); and multiliteracies in a global context of cultural and linguistic diversity. The purpose of the unit is to develop a heightened awareness of the need for all teachers to support student literacies across the curriculum. -- Course Website
