The orthodontic component of this unit concentrates on the general growth and development of the body, introducing development of the craniofacial complex including dentition and occlusion; occlusion; malocclusion including the classification, prevalence, aetiology, evaluation, diagnosis and characteristics of all types of malocclusion; the histological response to orthodontic and orthopaedic forces; the principles of treatment and their application; interceptive and preventive orthodontics; and elementary cephalometrics.<br/><br/>The paediatric component of the unit introduces students to the theory and techniques required to treat the child patient.
