This unit considers communication from a social science perspective drawing on key ideas and concepts from critical theory and mass communication. One half of the unit examines the discursive features and meanings of mass media texts—spoken, written and virtual. It explores the dimensions of discourse types (e.g. newspaper reports, blogs, TV commercials), speaker/writer/animator positions, power, and the effect of the globalisation on media communication in local and (inter)national communities.
