The unit is focused on contemporary research in the Classical world of Greece and Rome, recognising the multi-disciplinary nature of this research and the broad range of specialised skills which are needed to pursue it. Students work with specialists in a range of fields, such as archaeology, literary and linguistic analysis, and historical traditions. Emphasis is placed on the locating and utilising of resources to solve problems and to find up-to-date information quickly, and the strengths and weaknesses of particular resources are always a focus of discussion.
