This unit provides an introduction to the structural design process. This extends from the conceptual design stage through to the submission of final drawings. The importance of statics is highlighted and basic concepts of solid mechanics are explored. Stress, strength and stiffness are used to define structural forms and possible failure modes. Emphasis is placed on establishing designs which satisfy both safety and serviceability requirements. Project work is used to correlate calculations with engineering drawings and ultimately to construct useable structures. Students are also introduced to modern methods of structural analysis. -- Course Website
