This unit focuses on the chemical properties and description of matter at the level of atoms, molecules and chemical reactions. It comprises one half of the Level 1 units taken for a Chemistry major, but also acts as a service unit for students in a variety of other majors. The unit introduces essential knowledge and principles in the areas of atomic structure, chemical bonding, molecular geometry and stereochemistry. It discusses the properties and elementary reactions involving alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alcohols, ethers, haloalkanes, aldehydes, ketones, carbohydrates, carboxylic acids and derivatives, benzene and derivatives. The coverage includes important biological molecules, as... -- Course Website
