This unit introduces students to the idea of maritime archaeology sites as cultural heritage and to management strategies used in their protection. The main topics covered are cultural heritage legislation and agencies (such as ICOMOS, Burra Charter, Law of the Sea, UNESCO Convention on Underwater Cultural Heritage, Moveable Cultural Heritage, Historic Shipwrecks Act 1976), heritage management protocols, different types of heritage, and underwater heritage from international and Australian perspectives.
