The Tragic Vision

Tragedy is one of the most enduring and significant literary genres of the Western world, and one of the key forms through which people have thought about ultimate questions of human existence. This course introduces students to the tragic vision in literature through a study of key imaginative texts, with some reference to theoretical works on tragedy as well. Texts to be studied include novels, drama, and poetry, mainly written in English though some translated texts are also studied. Chronologically, the course ranges from the Ancient Greeks to the present day. Authors may include: Euripides, Seneca, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Marlowe, Webster, Chekhov, Henry James, Thomas Hardy, George... -- Course Website
