Students are presented with an overview of the current global status of waste production, management and associated impacts, and non-renewable resource depletion. Waste management and resource recovery is investigated on multiple scales, including on-site waste, municipal and industrial systems. Students gain skills in sustainable waste management, including resource recovery; containment to minimise contamination of resources (air, water, soil), greenhouse gas management; analysis of solid waste composition; calculation of greenhouse gas & leachate emissions and recycling.
