This unit focuses on investigation of principles and practices of music education in selected European countries, focusing on traditions and methodologies that have had international influence. The role of music in society and the institutions involved in music education will be considered, as well as curriculum issues and methodologies in countries such as Germany, Austria and Hungary, focusing on Kodaly, Orff and Dalcroze approaches to music education. An optional field trip is offered of approx 2-3 weeks to Europe, visiting schools and music education institutes for classes and observation (generally including: Dalcroze Inst., Geneva; Kodaly Inst., Kecskemet; and Orff Inst., Salzburg). -- Course Website
