This unit focuses on the range of ways young children encounter and use symbol systems from exploring their diverse everyday worlds. It introduces conceptual frameworks for understanding and critiquing the processes of how children learn about symbolic representation and communication from infancy through to the early years of school. Students will critically engage with current research, practice and policy in literacy and numeracy in multiple contexts. They will begin to develop pedagogical tools that will enable them to successfully support children's learning in literacy and numeracy. -- Course Website
