The unit explores the role of religion and spirituality in defining individual and collective beliefs and identities. It further examines how new religious movements are redefining and shaping our understanding of good and evil; selfishness and altruism; the self and the transcendental. Topics to be covered include: the definition of, and difference between religion and spirituality, the influence of religion and spirituality in human societies, the place of religion and spirituality in the public and political spheres, the relationship between religion and health, the environment, social relations, individual and collective identities. -- Course Website
