The unit examines some of the major works to emerge during the 100-year period that begins with Queen Victoria's inauguration and ends with the start of World War II. In particular, we will explore what has been dubbed 'the turn' from representational realism to formal experimentation in literature. Reference will be made to social changes and to the trends of thought accompanying these changes wherever this helps to suggest the chief characteristics of Victorian and Modern sensibilities. -- Course Website
