From coffee houses to opera houses, people from all classes of society in the nineteenth century participated in a wide range of musical activities. This unit studies the private, public and commercial institutions that supported the composition and performance of music in the nineteenth century and the changes to social structures and advances in technology that made such music-making possible. Equal attention is paid to the creation and reception of art music and popular music. The unit examines key musical styles across a range of genres including vocal and keyboard music, dance and band music, and music for the theatre and entertainments industries. -- Course Website
