This unit examines the factors that shape public policy outcomes and the consequences (both deliberate and unintended) that sometime result from particular policy choices. The unit is divided into three sections. Section one traces the theoretical and normative debates associated with the state in the policy making process, including an examination of the evolution of the state in the Australian context. Section two explores the institutions and actors that are central go the decision-making process. The course concludes with an investigation of a number of key policy areas. -- Course Website
