This unit introduces broad themes and debates in modern Japanese history, from the late Tokugawa period through the Meiji restoration, the growth of Empire with the annexation of Taiwan and Korea, Taisho democracy, the militarization of the early Showa period, the disastrous expansion of WWII and its immediate consequences for the emerging Japanese post-war state. Students completing this unit will have a solid background in the most important themes of the history of Modern Japan, and will be able to use this to deepen their understanding of contemporary Japanese culture and politics.
