This unit deals with acquired communication disorders in terms of their relevance to normal language use. It commences with a general introduction to the structure of the human brain, particularly as it relates to language use. Throughout the unit, we build on this basis in considering different types of brain damage that are associated with communication disorders (for example, stroke, head injury, dementia). Topics include: aphasia for spoken and sign language; acquired reading and spelling disorders; closed head injury; schizophrenia; and dementia.
