This unit investigates the western intellectual tradition of understanding and interpreting the natural world through museums from 'cabinets of curiosity' to 'museums of empire' including historical phases of natural history as popular culture. The unit focuses on how the developments in scientific understanding are reflected in a range of museum practice, including the impact of Linnean taxonomy and Darwinism. The impact of different biological preservation techniques is considered.
